FIFA Mascots Spheriks Animation
In 2002, as the global stage turned to the first-ever joint FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, I had the thrilling privilege of working as a storyboard artist for the official tournament mascots—The Spheriks (Ato, Kaz, and Nik). Collaborating closely as part of a dynamic, small creative team, we breathed life into these futuristic, cosmic football players from an outline script. Working with traditional pencil and paper, our hand-drawn boards captured the high-energy athletic spirit and unique personalities of Ato (the coach) and his star players Kaz and Nik, establishing the visual narrative and pacing for their animated adventures.
Set against the groundbreaking cultural backdrop of the first Asian World Cup, bringing the Spheriks from concept to screen required a seamless bridge between classic artistry and modern digital workflow. Once drawn, our storyboards were scanned and emailed directly to the animation studios, driving the production pipeline forward across international borders. The animated series was produced by London-based Computer Graphics with animation handled by Slave Studios, Passion Entertainment, and Furry Creatures, helping cement the Spheriks as iconic symbols of unity, technology, and sport on television screens worldwide.
