Comic Cartoons and Storyboard Artist
Posted 26th February 2024
Working as a professional comic and storyboard cartoon artist for publications and animations is a thrilling and rewarding career path. It’s a dream come true for anyone who has always been fascinated by the limitless possibilities of visual storytelling. As an artist in this field, you have the opportunity to bring characters and stories to life, entertain audiences, and collaborate with talented individuals from various disciplines.
Here’s a glimpse into what a typical day might look like:
Morning Routine:
The day usually starts with a morning routine to get into the creative zone. You might spend some time browsing online portfolios and blogs to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in the industry, or you could begin sketching out ideas for a new project.
Brainstorming and Pitching Ideas:
Once you have an idea for a project, the next step is to pitch it to the editor or producer. This involves creating a compelling pitch deck that showcases your ideas, art style, and unique perspective. You’ll need to be able to articulate the story’s concept, target audience, and potential market.
Concept Art and Character Design:
If your pitch is accepted, you’ll move on to the concept art and character design phase. This is where you bring your vision to life by creating sketches, digital paintings, and models of the characters, settings, and props. You’ll work closely with the editor or producer to ensure that the artwork aligns with their vision for the project.
Storyboarding:
The storyboarding phase involves breaking down the script into a series of panels that visually tell the story. You’ll need to have a strong understanding of the narrative arc, pacing, and visual storytelling techniques to create an effective storyboard. This process typically involves sketching out thumbnail layouts, refining the drawings, and adding annotations to indicate dialogue and sound effects.
Collaboration:
Throughout the project, you’ll collaborate with a diverse team of creatives, including writers, animators, voice actors, and sound designers. You’ll attend meetings, provide feedback, and make revisions to ensure that the final product meets the desired quality standards.
Final Production and Delivery:
Once the storyboard is approved, you’ll hand off your work to the animation team. You may continue to provide guidance and feedback during the production process, but your primary focus will shift to creating new content or pitching new projects. Once the animation is complete, you’ll participate in the premiere and promotion of the work, celebrating your hard work and the success of the project.
Maintaining a Work-Life Balance:
It’s essential to maintain a healthy work-life balance as a comic and storyboard cartoon artist. This might involve setting specific work hours, taking breaks to exercise or spend time with friends and family, and finding ways to unwind and recharge outside of work. Maintaining good mental and physical health will help you stay creative and productive over the long term.
Inspiration from an evening walk. Had to jot it down, even if it was on a flight back from Austria at the time.
